Volucella zonaria

Volucella zonaria is Britains largest hoverfly.  Completely harmless, a hornet mimic whose lavae live in wasps nests.

This one is a female and I photographed it in my garden in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire today.  It's a species that is spreading northwards because of global warming.

I'm not an Entomologist, the above information is courtesy of my friend (and Ecologist) Bill Meek.  Thanks Bill.
