Two Furlongs to Wold Newton.

Wold Newton is a village in the Lincolnshire Wolds and I've featured it several times on my blog.  However, this time I'm posting something just outside the village, in fact two Furlongs outside the village.

Along the grass verge approaching Wold Newton is one of the last remaining "mile posts" in the area. 

Set well back in the grass verge, the milepost can be completely covered in the undergrowth

but now the Cow Parsley & Nettles are dying back I'm able to get a good look at it.

On each face of the post are distances and destinations.

This inscription clearly advises us that Wold Newton is

0 miles but 2 furlongs along this road.

Grimsby, the largest town in the area is 8 miles & 3 furlongs away.

Louth, 9 miles away.

And sure enough, two furlongs along the road we meet Wold Newton.

There are 8 Furlongs to each mile so Wold Newton is a quarter of a mile

from the milepost.

Welton Village (Revisited).

We go to Welton to visit my wife's sister, while they're chatting I take Suzi for a walk around the village.  I  take my camera too.

On this walk I looked for things (or viewpoints) I haven't included on a previous post from Welton.

The village has quite a lot of new, modern housing but this is the old centre

with the Black Bull public house.

"The Mustard Seed", a charity shop run by St.Marys Church next door.

A Public Footpath runs through the churchyard, which I followed.

I passed some old headfstones.

The path lead me out of the Churchyard & into Church Lane.

Around the corner I spotted these carved owls on a wall top, they where carved

by Sarah Mitchell.  I introduced myself and she kindly allowed me to photograph them.

I also spotted the sign on her vehicle which is shown below.

The local Dentist!!

This Post Box appears to be a current, modern version

but the sign on it baffled me.

Another post box, for incoming mail perhaps?

A very modern Co-op store.

This lovely double fronted stone house is a "Double Takeaway" !!

I found myself back where I started, some people waiting for a bus.

The bus arrived and took them on their way.  To Lincoln?

Cows & Corn.

Just a few pics taken in the fields of Lincolnshire. 

A lot of fields are yet to be harvested but this one is all gathered in.

(Not a sloping horizon, this is the rolling Lincolnshire Wolds!)

Another field that has been harvested, ploughed & is now being seed drilled

for an overwintering cereal crop.  There's no time lost in the autumn.  

This area is a large pasture for cows and with a cattle grid at each end cars

can drive right through the herd.  The cows are used to it and don't even stop grazing.

Cows in this pasture and a harvested field adjacent to it; the Lincolnshire Wolds

are very varied and diverse.
