Sign of these times?

Many businesses have closed during this pandemic and Cleethorpes lost one of it's oldest shops in early June with the closure of "John Turner's" Butcher, Baker & Sandwich Maker.

I'm a vegetarian but was still saddened to see this old family firm close.

John Turner's shop in St. Peters Avenue, Cleethorpes.

The familiar "larger than life" figure of a butcher stood outside Turners for many years,
but now stands behind the permenently closed door.

An old delivery bike, standing over the shop front.

  1. Very sad to see such traditional shops closing - the end of era.
The delivery bike made me smile. When I was 13 or 14 I used to cover my friend's Saturday morning butcher's round. Fresh meat delivered to the butcher's customers. Never really liked doing the round but it gave me some occasional pocket money, not sure how much but think it may have been two shillings or half a crown.
    Thanks for the memories!

    1. Half a Crown was quite generous, that's how much I got for a paper round!

  2. Definitely a sign of the times. Restaurants in particular here have struggled to stay afloat and many just could not sustain their business during the pandemic, ultimately closing. Seems that for some old businesses whose owners have contemplated retirement and selling, the pandemic has been the deciding factor. It is such a shame to see longstanding independent shops close and I’m sure this closing is a blow to the community. Glad you could get some pictures before it is empty.

    1. Until the Pandemic I regularly photographed things around our area and over the years there have been lots of changes. When I photogrphed Turners shop I went in the evening when there wasn't many people about, it'll take us a long time to get over the fear of crowds and being in shops etc.

    2. Oh yes I am the same way. I never really liked big crowds, but felt fine at most local festivals and similar activities, but now we still avoid people in any closed area. There are still many young people getting sick and I think there is still a lot to learn and we should remain cautious. Take care. I always enjoy your local photos, both in town and in the countryside.
