It's so bracing!

The seaside resort of Skegness, on the UK east coast, has a motto. "It's so bracing!"  I was out walking along my local Humberston Fitties recently and was reminded of this motto as it was also very bracing where I was, on a dull day.  The tide was coming in rapidly under a heavy cloud laden sky and a stiff offshore wind whipped the waves up in a dramatic fashion!  Not the sort of day to be out taking photo's but I found it invigorating.  I spent an hour watching the tide as it crashed it's way in.

This was a several weeks ago but I've only just got around to editing the photo's following my recent cataract procedure.

Humberston Fitties is on the south bank of the Humber Estuary.  The line of detail along
the horizon is the Yorkshire coast on the Northern side.

This beach is a popular place for our visitors, on this day only a few locals were out.

The large boulders have recently been put in place to stop the headland being eroded.

On several occasions I got down low to emphasise the breaking waves and almost
got caught as they rapidly swept up the beach toward me!

These children weren't bothered and played in the water.

Another wave that I had to retreat from!

I took this to show the sandhills on the edge of the beach.

This group of hardy souls were determined to enjoy a visit to the beach and came
dressed appropriately.  It wasn't cold but the wind made it uncomfortable.

Looking down from the top of an embankment gave a good view of the dramatic
way the waves were crashing around the headland point.

From this high viewpoint I could see the family group were about to get wet, if they
didn't make a move!

Further along the steps down to the beach were getting a pounding.

I took this from the steps platform to show the waves surging up.

On my way back I could see the family group had beaten a retreat back into the higher
ground among the sandhills.

  1. Ooh, I'm a bit late again, David. Thank you for sharing these wonderful seascape photos. I love the moodiness of the sky and the busy turbulence of the water. You've captured the spray and the waves perfectly. I hope the weather is better for you now, though!

    1. Our weather has changed again Val, we now have heavy showers followed by warm sunshine, in quick succession. Frustrating but good for the farmers and our gardens. In weather terms you're not far away and I assume you are experiencing much the same.
Thanks for commenting Val, David and Popcorn

    2. Just popping in again, David. Well, you are right, we aren't so far away and now, I expect you are having the same heatwave we are experiencing. It's a summer of extremes, isn't it?

    3. It certainly is. We're expecting record temperatures this week and it's building up today. In our little stretch of coast though we have our own micro climate and our temperatures are usually a few degrees below rest of the UK.
Still going to be HOT though. David and Popcorn

  2. These are invigorating photos indeed! The current looks dangerous but this is sometimes when the sea is most intriguing and you’ve captured it perfectly. Those are truly brave souls to be sitting that close. No doubt they will eventually get sprayed until they head for higher ground! We have certainly had our share of wind and rough weather here recently with a record setting 83 tornado warnings and watches in this part of the state. We unfortunately lost a large tree to saturated ground.
I’m hoping your recovery from the cataract surgery has gone well and that you are back to taking and editing your photos. All my best, Ann

    1. Hello Ann, nice to hear from you, as ever.
The cataract went well, my eye cleared in a day or two and everything is so much sharper. Colours, especially the blue sky, are are lovely. I'm looking forward to getting the other eye corrected now.
      Take care, David and Popcorn
