A visit to Brigg.

Brigg is a small town that sits astride the River Ancholme in Lincolnshire.  It's a few years since we've been there so we had a walk around on a very sunny but very cold day.

This group of cottages is in the centre of the town.

Horse drawn stage coaches would have passed through these gates in days gone by.

The Angel Inn.

The River Ancholme runs through the centre of the town of Brigg.

On this wall is a list of goods and toll charges, presumably for charging people to
cross the river in days past.

Interesting to see most items are either a penny or tuppence but a horse costs Sixpence.
I'm assuming all these items arrived at the bridge in a horse drawn cart so it's a very
profitable way to charge.

Until recent years "Springs Preserves" had a factory on the banks of the River Ancholme
where they produced jam from various fruits. This wall plaque celebrates "Springs Delights".

Traditional English Fish & Chip shop next to an English & Chinese Food Shop.

Two locals enjoying the sunshine, and maybe a bit of cake?

The main street through Brigg is pedestrianised now but was once the main road through Brigg.
In recent years a bypass has taken through traffic away from the town centre.

  1. It looks like a lovely and very interesting town and your photos do a fantastic job of highlighting the preservation of the past, the varied architecture and the day to day life of the locals doing things we all do. Are there businesses and main thoroughfares on the outskirts of town that we would see anywhere with lots of traffic and modern buildings or is this town located in a rural area? Just curious. Very nice tour, thanks!

  2. Bring is pretty much self contained & surrounded by open countryside. On the outskirts though is Brigg Garden Centre, more like a shopping centre as it has outlets within it for many different retail trades. Lovely restaurant too! 😀

    1. I think you might like Brigg Diane, the "bandstand" is a modern version of a Butter Market. Purely for show now to illustrate what this part of town used to be.

  4. Looks a great market town from your photos - so much so I read a little on the Internet about it's history. A safe place to cross the River Ancholm since the 11th century - but I see it's up to date now as it even has a Lidl store! Great photos David and looks a very interesting town.
